China’s Changqing Oilfield, the country’s largest oil and gas production base, has reached a major milestone in its history. The China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) announced that the cumulative natural gas output from Changqing has now exceeded 700 billion cubic meters.

This volume is equivalent to replacing 850 million tons of standard coal and, according to PetroChina, has helped reduce over 1.02 billion tons of carbon emissions — a remarkable figure that highlights Changqing’s crucial role in China’s energy transition and environmental efforts.

55 Years of Continuous Development, Sustained Output in Recent Years

The Changqing Oilfield has been under continuous development for 55 years, during which 14 independent gas fields, including Jingbian, Yulin, and Sulige, have been brought online. Moreover, four trillion-cubic-meter-class reserve zones have been successively confirmed.

Lan Yi, Head of Gas Field Development at Changqing, stated: “Abundant resources and technological progress have enabled us to develop low-pressure, low-permeability fields while maintaining annual output above 50 billion cubic meters for three consecutive years.”

A Cornerstone of China’s Energy Security

Today, Changqing accounts for 25% of China’s total natural gas production, playing a vital role in meeting the industrial and residential energy needs of more than 50 major and medium-sized cities, including Beijing and Shanghai. According to CNPC, the field currently supplies residential gas to nearly 400 million people across these urban centers.
