Allocation of 340 Million Cubic Meters of Additional Gas to Industry through High-Efficiency Heater Replacement Plan

Saeed Tavakoli, Deputy Minister of Oil and CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company, announced that in the first phase of the national plan to replace 725,000 high-efficiency heaters, approximately 340 million cubic meters of natural gas will be saved and directly allocated to the industrial sector.

This important initiative is a major step towards optimizing energy consumption in a country where over 75% of the energy mix relies on natural gas.

According to Gasbonyan quoting the National Iranian Gas Company, Tavakoli said at the launch of this national project, which started with a $288 million investment, that replacing 725,000 low-consumption heaters is a key step in reforming the country’s energy consumption pattern.

Tavakoli added, “The gas saved as a result of this implementation will be directly allocated to the country’s industrial sectors.”

Tavakoli emphasized that, contrary to popular belief, Iran is not facing a gas shortage but rather an energy imbalance. He noted, “No other country in the world relies on natural gas for over 73% of its energy basket as much as Iran does; this high dependence intensifies the necessity for consumption management and efficiency in distribution.”

Iran’s Industry’s Dependence on Gas: An Undeniable Reality

As Iran’s industry critically needs gas for both development and sustainable production, optimization projects like replacing high-consumption heaters provide a unique opportunity to free up gas resources and allocate them to key drivers of the national economy.

Currently, more than 75% of the country’s energy mix depends on natural gas. This reliance extends beyond the residential sector to major industries—from petrochemicals to steel, cement, power plants, and even small and medium-sized enterprises—which strongly depend on gas for feedstock as well as thermal and electrical energy supply.

In this context, every cubic meter of gas saved in the residential sector means freeing resources for the growth and sustainability of the national industrial sector.
