For the first time in Iran’s gas industry, an undersea pipeline crossing beneath the Persian Gulf has been successfully completed. The 3-kilometer offshore section of the Bandar Abbas–Laft–Gourzin gas transmission line was installed using advanced Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) technology — a major milestone in gas supply to Qeshm Island.

The CEO of the Iranian Gas Engineering and Development Company (IGEDC) announced the successful completion of the offshore section of the Bandar Abbas–Laft–Gourzin gas pipeline, marking a historic achievement for Iran’s gas industry. The 3-kilometer stretch was laid beneath the seabed of the Persian Gulf using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) — a first in the country at this scale and complexity.

According to a report by Gasbonyan, Behnam Mirzaei stated that this offshore operation utilized cutting-edge HDD technology under extremely challenging conditions, including deep waters, high maritime traffic, strict environmental safeguards, and passive defense requirements.

He emphasized that the marine route from Bandar-e Pol to Laft on Qeshm Island was chosen as the most optimal path for the pipeline crossing. The line was installed with high precision at a depth of 70 meters — an unprecedented feat in Iran and a rare accomplishment globally in offshore gas pipeline projects.

Despite technical difficulties and international sanctions, the project was completed relying entirely on Iranian engineering expertise, advanced technologies, and effective project management. The execution team overcame operational risks and constraints through detailed planning and a commitment to quality.

With this critical phase now complete, Mirzaei noted that Qeshm Island is ready to receive a reliable and continuous gas supply for its industries, power plants, and residential consumers.

The full pipeline spans 59 kilometers with a 30-inch diameter, and is considered a strategic development project in expanding Iran’s southern gas transmission network. The successful undersea crossing is seen as one of the most technically demanding stages and a major step forward for the National Iranian Gas Company’s goals in the region.
